About Face
To the ancient Romans, Janus was an immortal god who represented new
beginnings. Janus was portrayed as a bearded figure with two faces. One face
looked west - toward the setting sun. The other face looked east - toward the
new day. The face that looked at the past was old. The one facing the dawn was
that of an immature youth. Janus
inspired the Romans to review the past and to look toward the future with hope.
We do not worship the god Janus today, but his inspiration, and even his name,
are with us. January, the first month of the year, is named in honor of Janus.
On January 1st, we, too, review
the past and look forward to the new year with hope.
Though it may be illogical, people make New Year's
resolutions every January 1st. On this day, we become intolerant of our imperfections, and we
vow never to be irresponsible again.
We may decide to stop being impolite or impatient.
Deciding to be perfect is an impractical
goal, however. No one, not even Janus, can do a complete about-face!
